The specific and common names are derived from the mica-like scales on the cap which reflect the light. A nationally common species which grows on dead and decaying wood, often buried, giving the appearance of growing in soil. Usually found in clumps. Like many species in this genus the gills start white but turn brown then black as the spores mature, eventually deliquescing
