Phylum: Basidiomycota   Family: Hygrophoraceae

Cuphophyllus virgineus var, virgineus (Wulfen) Kovalenko

Snowy waxcap

A common species of unimproved grassland and stable dune systems, tolerant of variations in alkalinity. Smooth, uniformly coloured waxy cap, slightly tacky, with decurrent gills. Until recently there were two colour-varieties with brown-suffused caps. These have now been absorbed into the nominate variety as natural variation.
