Lichenicolous fungi are highly specialized fungi that live exclusively on lichens, most commonly as host-specific parasites, but also as pathogens, saprotrophs or commensals on a range of species. The majority of species are ascomycetes with a small number of basidiomycete species. The last published list of lichenicolous fungi (and lichenicolous lichens) recorded in Great Britain and Ireland comprised 403 species (Hawksworth 2007) however, this is probably an under-estimate. The current world list cites 2319 species (Diederich, Lawrey and Ertz 2018).
